In May of 2023, two members of Virginia Wing Civil Air Patrol, 31 year old James Wentworth and 46 year old Franklin Basham were arrested. Wentworth was charged with aggravated sexual battery, indecent liberties with a child, cruelty to children, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Basham was charged with possession of child pornography.

According to the Portsmouth Police Department, both men are members of the Civil Air Patrol and Basham was an employee of Virginia Beach City Public Schools.
