Ohio Civil Air Patrol’s George Stone Killed in Airplane Crash

Colonel George Andress Stone, Civil Air Patrol, 1902-1948, was the first Chairman of the Civil Air Patrol Board, serving from August 1947 to August 1948, and also served as Ohio Wing Commander from 1942 to 1947.

Col Stone, was one of the authors plus an instrumental force in preparing and lobbying to get Public Law 476 passed.

Col Stone was killed when he and the Ohio Wing Liaison Officer Capt Harry Lee King, United States Air Force were leaving National Headquarters at Bolling Air Force Base to return to Ohio and their airplane struck a high tension line and crashed to the ground just outside of Washington D.C. on August 20, 1948.

Col Stone and Capt King are buried in a common grave at Arlington National Cemetery the inscription headstone is “To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die.”
