Rep Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) joined Civil Air Patrol when he was 13 years old after a friend invited him to a weekly squadron meeting. “I liked what I saw and decided I was interested in giving it a go,” said Kinzinger, whose private pilot father had instilled in him an appreciation for aviation and the military.
“I was under the impression that to be a pilot in the military, you must be the cream of the cream, the top of the top,” he said.
Little did Rep Kinzinger know how low the standards had been nor how much further they had fallen in 2005, at Red Flag Alaska in 2007, in 2014 or in Vermont in 2018.
“In CAP I got comfortable with a military environment, and it gave me the confidence I needed.”
During his time in the Illinois Wing’s McLean County Composite Squadron, Kinzinger found that “talking about leadership was very beneficial. Leadership is not something you learn in school. Kids have heard the word, but they don’t get it. In CAP we spent two hours a week talking about how to lead.”

Yet far too many of those same Civil Air Patrol members, some on the left coast and some on the right coast, are very much in disagreement with the statements that Kinzinger has made over the past two years. Perhaps these CAP members view themselves as more knowledgeable or otherwise more successful?

“I think President Trump was wrong (Monday) in a major way, and I think it was a very embarrassing press conference,” Kinzinger said. “That said, I stand with our intelligence agencies… It’s a disservice to call out the credibility, especially a disservice in front of the chief enemy of the United States that again in Syria bombs innocent children and hospitals. That’s something we need to continue to remember.”

“Donald Trump is beginning to cross a lot of red lines of the unforgivable in politics. I’m not going to support Hillary, but in America we have the right to skip somebody. That’s what it’s looking like for me today. I don’t see how I get to Donald Trump anymore.”

“I have visited nations ravaged by civil war. @realDonaldTrump I have never imagined such a quote to be repeated by a President. This is beyond repugnant.”
