MARIETTA — A member of the Georgia National Guard is accused of molesting youths who joined military-style groups designed to encourage children to join the military one day.

Scott Lombardi, 34, was charged Friday with several child molestation and sodomy charges after a month-long investigation.

Lombardi is accused of molesting an undisclosed number of youths through one of two organizations – the Civil Air Patrol or the Forward Academy.

The Civil Air Patrol is a volunteer organization for pilots and children who search for downed aircraft. The Forward Academy was an organization invented by Lombardi under the pretense of encouraging youth to join the National Guard.

Neither organization had any affiliation with the Georgia National Guard, although the Forward Academy met on the Guard’s grounds.

This story was published in the Athens Banner-Herald on Sunday, July 28, 2002.

Some activity took place on the grounds of the Georgia National Guard Armory which hosts Cobb County Composite Squadron in a small campus of trailers on its property. Lombardi met one 15 year old boy through his involvement in the Civil Air Patrol.
